Sometimes, too much! Some days I’m in an operating theatre observing how procedures are undertaken so I can understand how to make devices better. They’re the more interesting days. Other days, I’m sat writing the former up as a research paper. I like the practical stuff, but I spend more time sitting at a computer nowadays.

The majority of my time is spent in front of the screen using GUIs and CLIs as required to make sure everything is functioning correctly.

Sometimes there are specific hardware issues that need fixing but even then a screen would be used to diagnose a problem.

Most of my time spends in front of computer, either writing, researching or programming. However, there are days that I spend a whole week in the lab.

Most days I spent a lot of my time in front of a computer. One of the biggest elements in my work is to do simulations using a computer. So this has me working at a desk for several hours.

On average I would say I spend about 80% of my day on a computer but often that can be for answering emails, doing design work, ordering equipment, researching the work of other people and trying to find information. So it’s not all simulations!

Some days, if I’m doing experiments, I may only spend 20% of my time in front of a computer screen.

Quite a large bit of my day is spent in front of the computer. In fact, I should probably get my eyes checked. It includes reading papers online, writing, preparing lectures, computer modelling and answering emails. Usually, I’ll try to spend an hour or two every day in the lab to get away from the screen.
