      For the steerable needle project that I spend most of my time on, I think my greatest success came when I worked with someone else to improve the shape of the needle. This used a lot of experience in running tests that I had from a previous job. I was able to combine this with my knowledge of computer simulations and the result, when my colleague put it all to the test, was an improved needle cross section shape. We now use this, or small variations of it, for nearly all of our prototypes. It was a personal success as we used methods and skills that I had developed and learned throughout my career.

      When I showed the shape of our needle to someone at the Natural History Museum he was amazed as it was so close to the shape of the wasp that originally inspired the project. That was interesting.

      I think my computer design and modelling skills have been useful in solving problems efficiently without wasting a lot of money. I really like using computers to solve engineering problems like designing a heart valve for small children. That’s because I don’t need to spend a lot of time and money building lots of valves to prove they work but I can prove they work on the computer first. I can then change the design still using the computer however many times I want.
      That means when I eventually decide to build something, it has been tested a few times and I won’t waste time building one that wouldn’t work.

      Definitely my ability to design custom medical devices quickly enough for the surgeons (who do not have a lot of time to spare) to understand how they will work. I’ve used this skill to design many implants and prostheses, which in turn has helped surgeons to undertake their procedures better.

      Manufacturing engineering requires good design skills.
