I would like to buy some Lego NXT to use on our stand at the Imperial Festival. The Imperial Festival is a chance for the public to come to the College and see the research that we do.

The Lego would form an introduction to robotics and I would like to run a competition for the children who visit our stand over the weekend. This will be a good introduction to robotic concepts but will also encourage families to visit and talk to us about the engineering and medical robots that we work on.

I’d like to create videos that can be used to help illustrate the application of engineering in medicine to pupils, students and patients clearly. My field of creating custom implants and prostheses is dominated by academic literature or relatively poorly conveyed media hype. This makes it difficult for non-specialists to understand the potential engineering has to improve patient outcomes and be fun to work in. I’d like to follow cases through from initial patient consultation, liaising with surgeons/prosthetists, the design process, manufacturing, surgery and follow up. There’s nothing like it at the moment.

I’d use it to develop a working heart model to show case at schools and exhibitions. Existing models in shops are not very good and don’t show the heart working properly. I’ll get two small pumps to act as the left and right ventricles of the heart and get students to try increasing or decreasing the heart rate to see what would happen. They can also see what happens when there’s a faulty valve.

Using my model I will build a £D-printed bionic hand and will use it for different science exhibitions and school visits.
