My friend and colleague won “I’m a scientist get me out of here” and I liked the way it engaged students. I felt I had something to offer and am really enjoying it so far.

I’m a STEM ambassador so I’m actively seeking opportunities to engage with schools and the general public to encourage them into thinking about engineering careers. Someone at my work suggested this to me and I loved the idea so I signed up!

I thought it was a good idea to show people the variety of things that Engineers do. Sometimes when I tell people I’m a Mechanical Engineer they think I can fix their car. I can’t! I’m interested and understand a bit about how cars work, but I spend my time worrying about problems associated with surgery and medicine rather than heavy machines.

My niece is also really interested in what I do at work. Explaining to her what I do at work also makes me look at my own job and career in a different way. This is very refreshing.

Finally, I thought it would be an interesting challenge and fun to see how people outside my (little) world see Engineers.

I enjoying sharing ideas and being challenged. I didn’t know there was an element of competition until after the first chat!
