I have been lucky to meet some really experienced engineers at conferences and other events where we showcase our work. They won’t be famous on TV but they’re still famous because they’ve made huge steps in engineering that’s now used or mentioned by many other engineers.

I’ve met people are famous in my field, but it’s not exactly red carpets, TV personalities and fancy balls! I’ like to meet Rowan Atkinson (also known as Mr Bean and star of many comedy shows) who actually has a background in engineering and maths. I’d imagine he’d be pretty interesting to talk to.

Sadly, engineering isn’t a profession that has many mainstream ‘famous’ people. We’re all too busy working 😉

We had Lord Robert Winston come visit us fairly recently. You might remember him as the moustachioed Professor who presented TV shows like “The Human Body”.

The department I work in was run by a professor who was one of the surgeons who did the first ever heart transpalant here in the UK. Professor Donald Longmore was a pioneer in heart surgery and cardiac imaging. He also has some of the most amazing stories about old school medicine and surgery.

I don’t think I’ve met any really famous engineers. I did once walk past Stephen Hawking on the street.

Lots of the people I work with are quite well-known by a small number of engineers who do similar jobs. But that really doesn’t count. There aren’t many really famous engineers are there though? We’re generally quite modest.

I did also once walk past Brian Cox too!
