The scariest thing was the first time I went to a laboratory where I knew there would be dead bodies.

I went with some other people and that gave me courage but I was terrified the night before and did not sleep well.

I was probably scared the first time I had to give a presentation to a large group of people. That was a long time ago though.

Sometimes it is very hard to accept an idea that I’ve had won’t work and to move on to something else.

It might be a surprise, but writing for me was very hard. You have to write a lot sometimes and sometimes in a different style than you’re used to. My doctorate was over 200 pages long, and sometimes there were days when I couldn’t even write a single word but the deadline was getting close!

My PhD viva (a big exam) was pretty tough. One of my examiners gave me a difficult time. However, having gone through that, I am better-able to deal with difficult situations.

We learn the most from the things that are most challenging.
